Church to Dedicate Solar Panels
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, September 11, 2009

An east side Milwaukee church will dedicate its new solar panels at its 10 a.m. service Sunday, joining a number of local congregations that are investing in renewable energy. The project at Lake Park Lutheran Church, 2647 N. Stowell Ave., was two years in the making and is part of the church’s “care for creation” theology.

“It is a reminder for us as Christians how deeply we are called to care for creation,” said Lake Park’s pastor, the Rev. David Dragseth.

Lake Park on Sunday will unveil the 17-kilowatt array. The $130,000 project was funded in part with $90,000 in grants from Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy program and We Energies. We Energies will buy the energy generated by the panels at a set price for 10 years - offsetting the church’s energy costs - and the panels are expected to pay for themselves in 10 to 15 years, according to Dragseth.

The strategy will free up dollars for Lake Park’s mission work, he said, including its partnership with All Peoples Lutheran Church in Milwaukee.
