The Brown Bag Bible Study group meets weekly at noon on Thursdays. The group reads the texts for the coming Sunday, gives the pastors and seminarian intern some great ideas for sermons AND enjoys a great cup of fair trade coffee from our nifty espresso maker! Questions, debates and historical insight are always part of our time together. All are welcome!
Women’s Ministries at Lake Park offer a variety of ways for women to connect with each other, deepen their faith lives and explore God in the world. All women are welcome to join in the fun!
This group meets on the third Wednesday each month. During the school year we meet at Cafe Hollander on Downer Avenue and during the summer our location varies. Sometimes our conversation is focused with a book or topic and other times we just meet for fellowship and relaxation.
Held monthly in the fall and spring. In a little throw back to grade school we bring an item, based on the topic for the evening, to share with the group. These gatherings are hosted by a different member each month.
Though men are always welcome, we’ve only seen women at this month gathering of knitting, crocheting, weaving and other hand crafts. The group meetings on the first Thursday of the month at various members homes.
Held annually, often in January or early February, the Women’s Retreat offers a time of respite. In the past we have done walking prayers, learned about the creeds, discussed self-esteem, etc.
Hang out with the guys, talk about God and tackle some tough reading. We meet the last Wednesday of each month at Café Hollander on Downer Avenue and turns some heads when we talk about God (gasp) in a pub! Pastor David coordinates this group.
Get away for a one-night retreat each spring. It’s just a short drive and a nice break from the rigors of every day life. Led by Pastors Sandy and David.
Lake Park’s Men’s Ministry – A reflection by Brian Stahlkopf
“There is a male way of feeling, and men need to rediscover it”
~ Richard Rohr, Franciscan Priest
Richard Rohr is renowned for his retreats and lectures on male spirituality. His quote reminded me of Lake Park’s Guys’ Night Out and men’s retreat. Both have allowed me the opportunity to discuss, debate, laugh, cry, and enjoy the camaraderie of other men of faith in an atmosphere of openness and acceptance. They have also provided me fellowship outside of the confines of church. Most importantly, both have assisted me in discovering a deeper meaning in my relationship with God and the men of LPLC.
At Guys’ Night Out, I was greeted by about ten men, genuinely interested in getting together, sharing company over a beer, and discussing their faith lives. Sometimes we discuss a book or an article. Sometimes we debate current events or simply share what is going on in our lives. Regardless of the topic, however, we contemplate and explore how Christ is present in our lives.
Last year the men’s retreat took place at a retreat center outside of Greenbush, Wisconsin. The facility was top notch with comfortable beds, several indoor fireplaces, a world class kitchen, and a game room with a fascinating English bumper pool table. We had a wonderful meal of tenderloin beef and pork grilled by our master chef Pastor David. The next morning we had an equally impressive breakfast orchestrated by Pastor Sandy. The retreat’s focus was on personal journeys. We spent time sharing stories, listening, and providing supportive encouragement. The bonds and relationships I began to develop at the retreat have only continued to grow. Upon leaving the retreat, I wish it could have been longer.
As a church we are blessed to have so many college students who attend and live near the church. As we partner with Lutheran Campus Ministry at UWM we hope to get to know you and also welcome you to also worship at Lake Park.
You are welcome to join us as a visitor as often as you like or to join the church as a full or associate member. Associate members retain their membership at their home congregation, but are also members at Lake Park. Either way you are welcome to participate in any of the ministries, discussion groups, bible studies and events.
The seniors of Lake Park are an active group! You might see them in the nursery playing with our youngest members, organizing a Third World Handcraft sale before Christmas, engaging in our Senior Center, Tuesday Club, joining in a weekly bible study or coordinating a writing workshop. They occasionally sit back and relax!
Please see below for the current Senior Center schedule and activities!
Join Lake Park Seniors on Tuesdays (September – early June) as we share fellowship, riveting discussions and enjoy a variety of informative presentations from talented guests. Coffee & Fellowship begins at 11:30AM, followed by a deliciously nutritious lunch ($5) at noon. We wrap up with a presentation at 1pm.
Be reminded that the Lake Park Tuesday Club for Seniors will close for inclement weather whenever MPS is closed; otherwise, we meet every Tuesday for fun and fellowship. A nutritious lunch is a highlight and only $5.00.
Top 10 reasons to come to Tuesday Club:
1. Fellowship – We get out of the house and keep in touch with old friends.
2. We share memories and miseries.
3. Warm noonday healthy meal – Having a nutritious lunch together is a delicious experience.
4. Great programs – Informative guests provide worthwhile discussions and food for thought.
5. Learn more about health issues and have an opportunity to ask questions.
6. Grow in faith. Bible study is most inspirational.
7. Keep one’s mind alert.
8. Members of the church share their talents and hobbies with the seniors.
9. Lifelong learning – we learn something new every week.
10. Members are healthier because we are important to each other. We look forward to seeing each other every week.
The Tuesday Club for Seniors is always looking for provocative and timely presenters. If you have some flexibility in your schedule on Tuesdays, we have a place for you to share your talent, expertise or true love. A free lunch and the adoration of the Tuesday Club seniors is your reward. Are you a college student dying to share the latest research paper you have written? Are you a youth member of Lake Park with a hobby or musical talent to share? All ideas are welcomed. Take us on a journey we might not have anticipated. This is an intellectually curious group looking for fun. Join us!
Through seasonal membership drives, the Lake Park Lutheran Luther The manor auxiliary program supports Luther Manor, an accredited Continuing Care Retirement Community in Milwaukee that has served area seniors for more than 40 years. Donations are utilized in many ways at Luther Manor to enrich the lives of its residents: for purchase of craft supplies for activities, beauty shop equipment, items for the Ice Cream Parlor and the aviary.
In addition, Lake Park Lutheran collects cookie donations, and over 3,000 dozen cookies were donated by the 27 auxiliary congregations in 2009. Volunteers bring smiles everyday to the residents while sharing donated cookies, coffee and conversation. There is a basket in the narthex of the church for cookie collection, so feel free to add a package to your grocery list to warm the Luther Manor residents. There are also many volunteer opportunities for adults and teens. Contact Linda Gaalaas for more information.
